Pastor Letter

Greetings in the name of our Christ!

I am excited to share a beautiful development in our Los Altos UMC student ministries. Late this past fall, at a Youth Core team meeting, student leaders and I were having conversation around the larger United Methodist Church of which we are a local church family. We were discussing our connectional system. A few of our students have attended and even made presentations to our California-Pacific conference, which gathers annually to “holy conference” (i.e., prayerfully consider, discuss and discern issues facing the larger church body). As we were remembering that experience, we began discussing our global connections to the United Methodist Church, and I could feel energy on the rise as I shared that the UMC General Conference 2016 is being held in Portland, Oregon, this May. I explained how ...

General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church which meets once every four years. The conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs.

From that Core Team meeting, a few of our students started to dream a little dream about attending General Conference. And now, I’m excited to share that Los Altos UMC will be sending a small team of older high school students, and a few adults, to observe, learn from and volunteer at General Conference from May 12-16 this spring.

This is a chance like no other to see our global church gathered in worship, prayer, discernment and action. We will be hearing from Bishops, volunteering in legislative committees, observing the floor of general conference, and even shadowing our own delegates. We are also hopeful that we will be able to meet with our Bishop for a short Q&A while we are there, as she is so supportive of meeting with young disciples. Now, church, I ask you: would you pray for this team? This is an exciting development, and such an opportunity to support our students’ faith and church journeys. We need prayers for wisdom in our preparations, and prayers for low-cost travel and lodging! : )

In fact, let’s open our hearts, and let’s lift up prayers for the WHOLE church across the globe, as the whole UMC together prepares for General Conference!

What an exciting time we are experiencing in our church family!

Your sister in Christ,

Pastor Melinda
