Minstry Letter

Friends, How blessed are we that we have the capacity to lead four weeks of summer day camp at Los Altos UMC? It’s been a wonderful summer— full of learning, playing, and growing together in Christ. Today, I want to share with you a few reasons why Groundlings Summer Day Camp has been successful.

The Directors— Becca Swartz and Mariah Lefler did an INCREDIBLE job of leading—they were present each day with the children, mentored the interns and counselors in their leadership, organized daily activities, and went above and beyond to make camp a great experience for all involved. Hiring more people to serve as directors was a new addition to Groundlings this year— a necessity for camp to grow. A HUGE thank you to the LAUMC Foundation for the grant to cover part of the cost.

The Interns— The Interns consisted of four high school and college students— Victoria Russell, Emily LaSalle, Jordan Smith, and Abby Flores. Each lead a family group of 6-9 kids per week. They were the people in the middle of everything— guiding the children in activities and helping them to learn to work as a team. There were countless times the Interns displayed the heart of Christ this summer. It is their care for the children that makes Groundlings a uniquely special place.

The Counselors— Many of our high school and middle school youth volunteered as counselors at camp. The youth arrived daily, full of energy and kindness. When the interns were wearing down, they relied on the counselors to keep camp fun and exciting for the campers. They made camp super-fun!

Adult volunteers—Groundlings gained wisdom and support from adult volunteers who lead lessons, crafts, and music. The children had the chance to get to know and learn from several wonderful people that they may not have had the chance to connect with otherwise. Both the children and volunteers had a great time because of this shared experience.

The campers and their families— Camp has grown exponentially this summer, and we have been able to share the love of Jesus with so many children. Thanks to all the parents who supported camp this summer by bringing their children and all the camp families from last summer who invited friends. I was constantly getting comments from the adult volunteers of how wonderful the children were and what a great time they had working with them.

You! The church! — Not only have you supported camp this year with your prayers, leadership, snacks, and scholarship donations— you raised these wonderful leaders who are in turn raising a next generation of people in the love of Christ. This is true discipleship, and this is how the church continues and grows.

Let’s celebrate!
